MOCK EXAM 600 WORDS

Digital media technology continues to develop. How is this significant for companies and audiences.

It is significant for music companies such as Sony to adapt to the current developing digital technology as they could otherwise resolve in bankruptcy. In comparison  if the audience understand and develop to this new media technology they  can use this beneficially to their advantage. The audience can become prosumers; the role of prosumers and institution connect to make their own music and make money from it, no record label needed. Resulting in audiences and aspiring artists realising that due to developing digital technology that they do not need to be tied to a record label necessarily in order to create and promote  good quality music that can be successful. This is why it is fundamental for record labels to adapt to developing music technology as this current realisation from aspiring artists could result in their bankruptcy.

Mashups allows prosumers to take a variety of published songs form record labels back catalogues and blend together to create an alternative track.  Prosumers have understood how they can get this music out without being tied down with copyright laws. New music technology such as YouTube, face book and twitter allows prosumers to share their music without the issues of them being accused of copying music. This is due to social sites not being owned by the record labels and so they can easily mashup music viral. Once the music is viral it would be difficult for the record company to remove the mash up completely. Alternatively the record companies could demand a percentage of the profit the producers of the mashups have regulated which would be significant to the company.

The result of EMI’s failure to adapt to developing music technology evidently highlight why record labels need to adapt to ensure their survival in the music industry. Record labels are aware of the increase in piracy due to it being easily done now with advanced technology such as ‘MP3converter’ which allows music to be downloaded form YouTube for free, which is a risk to the company’s sales as generally customers will prefer to purchase the music if its free. If record labels adapt to this newfound knowledge with developing websites they could understand the benefits of how this online piracy could be beneficial to their company. Piracy should be looked at as a positive as it is promoting the record labels artists music getting it out to lots of people alto more easily as they don’t have to pay for it. This is an excellent form of promotion for the record label without them having to spend money on the promotional element.

Recently for record companies marketing and image more important than music. hey generally focus on artists appearance as opposed to the music material. For example, one Direction have been styled to look like ‘young role models’ even though the boys are now in  their twenties. The record company focus on the look as they know there target market is attracted to the boys image as opposed to the music which is about teenage girls which basically reinforces and links back to their image.  New technology can allow prosumers who want to make good quality music get their material heard to prevent the music industry from continuously recycling itself initiating stale , expected music. The role of institution and audiences have become similar and connect  they now make their own music and make money form it  Moreover, the music can be distributed using advanced music technology without the support of a music company. For example an array of sources such as garage band, splice ,auto tune ultimately allow a prosumer to create music easily,  cheaply, and without having to give a percentage of the sales to a demanding record company. This technology has inspired prosumers to use it to their advantage so that they can create music that is of a good quality that is not stale and expected, this can be considered significant to audiences as it allows a sense of variation within music in the music  industry.

In conclusion, institutions such as record labels can benefit from adapting to developing media technology like free downloading websites such as ‘mp3converter’ as a form of free promotion for their artists music. Additionally, they can understand the impact of not adapting to this technology and the fundamentality of why they should not follow in the steps of now bankrupt EMI due to their late adaption of new technology. Moreover audiences can use this new technology beneficially to adapt into becoming prosumers where they can actively produce songs with new technology such as ‘garage band’ ‘autotune’ ‘splice; which can be promote  through other technology on the internet such as YouTube, facebook twitter through the use of their own music material and mashups without being tied down with the laws of record companies and the percentage cut that they would take of the artists sales.

CONSTRUCTION- Transferring and editing Foley sounds onto Final Cut Pro 10

Transferring and editing Foley sounds onto Final Cut Pro 10

This is fnal Cut Pro 10 . Here I have edted the foley sounds nto the film. Firstly, the long green track is the sound track i then put below it two foley sounds. I have to ensure the foley sounds are in sync with the shot to make it look beleivable. Additionally, the foley sound has to blend into the soundtrack well. For example, if there is a loud part on the soundtrsck the foley sound will have to be louder to ensure that it is heard and vice versa with the soundttrack being quiet. These were a few factors i had to constantly consider.

This image shows the black line in the green box being moved down to 13db. This was done to make the sound effect of footsteps more quiet as the victim was walkng from a long shot angle with the shot that this foley sound is synched with. Therefore, the decibels would have to be lowered in order for the shot to look realistic.

This image shows the layering of foley sounds. In certain shots mroe than one foley sound was required. For example for the London scenes had to overlay a variety of different sounds due to there being so many different sound effects that would be happening in London at one time. For example, the image above shows me overlaying the sound effects as there would have to be 'wind' /people talking' 'traffic' /vehicles' driving past 'sirens' all at the same time. It is important all these sound are used to make the opeining realistic and set a standard for the rest of the supposed film.

CONSTRUCTION- Downloading specific Foley Sounds

Downloading specific Foley Sounds

I got most of my Foley sounds from youtube, due to to that website having the largest range of sound effects that i could find. For example, the sound effect of an escalator i could only find on youtube. I then downloaded the youtube clip to my memory stick.

I also got sounds from sound bible too. However, these sounds were more basic and i could only find a limited amount of sounds from there for example, cop siren noise.

The sounds i choose had to be specific towards the thriller opening and had to be realistic. For example, footsteps. Both main characters in the thriller opening were walking on concrete in London. therefore I therefore i had to find not only footsteps but footsteps that sounded like they were walking on concrete. This was where youtube was useful as there is a large range of sound effects available on there that covered 'footsteps on concrete.'

Additionally, the vehicle the assassin drove was a mini cooper. Therefore i had to find and research what the engine of a mini-cooper sounded like and on youtube and find the correct sound effect. It was important i used the sound of the engine of a mini cooper as otherwise it would not be realistic.

This was me picking a sound effect of the mini cooper engine sound effect on youtube.

This is me downoading and converting that sound effect on youtube mp3 converter

This is me downloading music from sound bible for example- the sound of the car beeping.

We have each done a individual edit. I have looked through the video considering that a lot of the sound will be taken out , as it will have put out and then be edited in to make it sound clearer louder and more professional. Social CLass- Mock Exam- Merlin

MOCK EXAM- SOCIAL CLASS

Within social class, Merlin represents the stereotype of Working class. In this scene Merlin resembles his this stereotype through his clothing. He is introduced as  wearing a ragged scarf and baggy clothing which emphasizes the suggestions that they are too big for him and that he cannot get any other clothes that would fit him which suggests that he is working class. Especially due to the fact that working class people are stereotyped as not having much money and are not respected. This shows him to not having much power as he wears  ragged clothing and therefore has no money and so cannot have an powerful influence on society  as he has no money to do that with. This represents him as powerless as money gives you power. This therefore reinforces the stereotype of working class as to being people with no money resulting in no influential power.  Additionally, he reinforces the stereotype of working class through consistently throughout the scene being shot form an high angle. For example, when Merlin  falls to the floor a number of times when Arthur tries to attack him. This high angle shot defuses any sense of power or status form him as the camera is looking down on him which emasculates him, making him appear weak and powerless. Moreover, he is not defending himself but trying to get away from Arthur which also shows his weakness.  This therefore reinforces the stereotype of working class as he is representing this class as to being people who are weak and incompetent when it comes to defending themselves. However he does challenge the stereotype of working class as when Arthur says “don’t run away” the camera is focused on a close up shot of Merlin and then Arthur and his men are in the background slightly out of focused. This makes Arthur and his men appear insignificant and therefore low status opposed to Merlin who has prominence and in focus reinforcing him as to having prominence in the shot which gives him power. This challenges the stereotype of working class as they are typically represented as to being weak whereas Merlin represents them as being in power through the use of being most prominent in a shot. Additionally, he motivates the cut when he uses his magic to make Arthurs weapon come out of his hand and become tangled within a hoop. The close up shot of Merlin eye shows the magic and how that influences the shot to be cut to Arthurs weapon being taken out of his hand. This represents Merlin to having power, and so therefore challenges the typical powerless stereotype of working class and how they can still be represented as with power.

The character Arthur is stereotyped as Upper class. He reinforces this stereotype through mise en scene. Arthur wears silver clothing. The colour silver symbolizes wealth which highlights the suggestion that he is upper class as they are stereotyped as having lots of money and showing it through their clothing. Silver is expensive too which shows that his clothing is expensive and so he would need to be rich and so forth upper class to afford it. His silver creates the suggestion that he is someone of  a high status as silver was worn but royalty in which Arthur is. His silver armour makes him appear intimidating opposed to Merlin who had no body armour on,  as it gives  Arthur the competitive advantage. This makes him appear powerful and in control which reinforces the stereotype of upper class that are symbolized as being powerful and high status. Through the use of sound he reinforces this type of upper class. This is shown through the use of sound that was added in and emphasized to appear louder on Arthur’s weapon swinging through the air. It created a sharp whipping noise which sounds powerful and as the sound is quick it reflects Arthurs skill with the weapon. The use of making the sound louder on the weapon gives it power and as Arthur is holding this powerful weapon it gives him power too. This reinforces the stereotype of upper class as they are represented as being powerful and educated and trained in what they do.  In addition, there are   fast pace cuts throughout the action scene when Arthur attempts to attack Merlin. These fast cuts reflect Arthurs quick retaliation skills to Merlin’s defences emphasizing his confidence and power. This reinforces the stereotype of upper class. Arthur is represented from a low angle shot when he has the weapon in his hand. This makes him appear intimidating as a low angle shot makes a person look taller, hence the intimidation. Also as he is looking down on someone suggest he is higher status and more powerful which reinforces the stereotype of powerful, dominant, upper class people.
